If you can not install plugins and themes in XAMPP for Linux Localhost and you see this error

unable to connect to the file system. Please confirm your credentials

You can easily fix this error by adding this code in your WordPress wp-config.php file

define( 'FS_METHOD', 'direct' );

/* That's all, stop editing! Happy publishing. */

And after adding this code if you see another following error

Installation failed. Could not create directory

You will have to open your WordPress directory in Linux

/opt/lampp/htdocs/wordpress

Now open terminal and type this command to fix the error

chmod 777 -R wp-content
or
sudo chmod 777 -R wp-content

this will solve the error.
