A blaze is often a simple paint stroke on a tree trunk, but it can also be a plastic or metal marker attached to a tree or post. Trails are typically color-coded, so if you're hiking in an area with a network of trails, be sure to know the color of the trail you're following and stick to that color as you hike. Use common sense when interpreting trail blazes. For instance, I recently came across a large blaze shaped like a "Y" and interpreted this to mean the trail splits and either direction is an option.
