American artist Tschabalala Self (b. 1990) primarily identifies as a painter, but her artwork transcends traditional boundaries, blending painting, collage, and sculpture. Self incorporates various pigments, textiles, threads, and printmaking techniques, often utilizing recycled materials and detailing with a sewing machine. Her life-size sculptures and paintings create immersive narrative scenes that challenge and reimagine themes of race and gender.

Born and raised in Harlem, New York, Self’s work draws on her personal experiences as a Black American woman, presenting imagined figures that embody a new narrative surrounding the Black body. These figures navigate spaces with a unique quality of being, deeply rooted in their community and culture.

The exhibition’s title, "Around the Way," reflects a Black American expression describing individuals from and deeply connected to their neighborhoods. Through this lens, Self's work captures the essence of these communities, claiming space and redefining how these individuals are seen and understood.
