COLUMBUS (Lisa Rantala) -- A record indictment came down Tuesday involving members of a violent street gang that the U.S. attorney calls the largest murder indictment in state history.

Federal agents targeted 17 men who they say made up the "Cut Throat Committee" and "Homicide Squad" of the Short North Posse.

They say that street gang identifies itself nationally with the Crips.

During 2005 through 2012, agents say one or more of the 17 indicted robbed, stole and killed up to 13 people who were members of rival gangs, drug dealers or knew too much.

The indictment claims ring leader Brandon Ledbetter even killed his own girlfriend, Crystal Fyffe, in 2011 to keep her from talking to police.

For the first time, agents say 11 of the Short North Posse's hired hit men could wind up paying for their crimes with their lives since they're eligible for the death penalty.

Most of the 17 are in custody awaiting trial while agents say two remain on the run.

They ask anyone who knows the whereabouts of Ishmael Bowers and Tysin Gordon to call police right away.
