Basic Script:
Hey YouTube, today we’re looking at a pretty cool networking device, the TL-WR710N from TP Link. This 5-in-1 device allows for a whole range of different wireless options that could be useful in a multitude of different set-ups. The device itself is fairly small coming in at 85 x 75 x 28 millimetres. This particular version features a UK 13Amp plug however this can easily be swapped out depending on your region. On the bottom we have a WAN/LAN port as well as a LAN port, that both support up to 100Mbps. We also have a small reset pin hole and one USB A-port that can be used for either file sharing or USB charging, particularly useful when out and about. The only other physical feature we have is a status light on the front of the device, letting us know if the device is working properly.
Setting the device up is fairly easy via any Mac or PC however there are several modes of operation that allow the device to perform different functions.
Firstly the device can act as a wireless Router, allowing multiple devices such as laptops, tablets and phones to be connected to the internet via WiFi or the LAN port on the bottom. This makes it perfect for use at home or in hotels where wireless access may not be available.
Secondly is Client mode where the device can allow a wired-only device to connect to an existing wireless network. Super useful for older tower PCs, Games consoles or SmartTV boxes such as the BT YouView box.
Next-Up is repeater mode where we can use the plug to extend an existing wifi network, improving signal strength and maximising coverage. This is useful in large properties where the range of the main router may not be sufficient.
Access Point Mode allows you to connect wireless devices to an existing wired network, often found in University Dorms or residential buildings.
Finally we have the WISP Client Mode allowing devices to access the internet via an outdoor WISP access point.
The user interface allows for easy switching between modes as well as advanced settings for complex network setups. The TL-WR710N supports 802.11 B,G and N allowing upto 150Mbps of theoretical data transfer. Note that 5Ghz operation is not supported by this model.
Having primarily used the device as a wireless access point for the last couple of weeks I am overall happy with its performance and reliability. I like its compact and simple design allowing for clean installation while the wireless range is particularly good considering it only features internal antenna. One design flaw I could see improved with this product is the ability to move the router away from the socket as sockets aren’t always available in the ideal location for a wireless router.
That’s about it for this video, if you have any questions please drop them in the comments below. Thanks for watching and I’ll see you in the next video.
