A lot of issues affecting international students in Ontario (and more broadly in Canada) are known but not widely discussed. The public and policy conversations often focus on tuition fees, housing shortages, and post-graduation work permits, but there are several under-discussed issues that international students themselves often raise.

One day I asked one of my college professor, Sir! What international students issues are not discussed in Ontario or Canada? He replied, Great question & started — a lot of issues affecting international students in Ontario (and more broadly in Canada) are known but not widely discussed. The public and policy conversations often focus on tuition fees, housing shortages, and post-graduation work permits, but there are several under-discussed issues that international students themselves often raise. Here are some key ones:

1. Mental Health & Cultural Adjustment
First, Stress from high tuition and living costs is discussed, but the emotional toll of isolation, cultural shock, racism, and family separation often gets overlooked.
Second, Limited culturally appropriate mental health services — counseling may not match cultural/religious contexts.

2. Exploitation in the Job Market
Main item is - Discussions often mention students working long hours, but not the systemic exploitation (e.g., under-the-table jobs, wage theft, unsafe work, or discrimination when applying for professional roles).

Second - Employers sometimes prefer international students because they can be pressured into lower pay, but this reality isn’t openly addressed.
