Описание к видео Gretl Braun, the sister of Eva Braun, the wife of Fegelein

The younger sister of Eva Braun, Margarete Berta Braun known as Gretl, was born on 31 August 1915 in Munich. Her father, Friedrich, known as Fritz was a master carpenter and a teacher and was born in 1879. Her mother, Franziska known as Fanny, was a seamstress born in 1885. The couple had three children, all girls, Ilse born in 1908 and Eva born in 1912.
In April 1932 Gretl started to work at the photo studio of Heinrich Hoffmann in the sales department. As the official photographer for the Nazis, Hoffmann’s business was expanding as the party was now the largest in the Reichstag. Eva had already been working there for two years and by this time had met Hitler and been out on dates with him to restaurants and the cinema. Hoffmann may have wanted to do his friend Adolf a favour but in any case he needed the staff. Gretl had probably met the by then famous extreme right wing politician who was about to become dictator. There were two sides to Hitler’s character and with women he could be extremely charming which some put down to his Austrian upbringing, one assumes that the 16 year old could have liked the 43 year old father figure with the funny accent and old world charm who was dating her sister.
Gretl and Eva were inseparable. In August 1935, much to the chagrin of her father Fritz, Hoffman, on instructions from Hitler, got Eva a three-room apartment in Munich and in the following year a house in Bogenhausen, a rather wealthy district of Munich. .
Gretl spent a lot of time with her sister Eva at the Berghof at Obersaltzberg above Berchtesgaden. Thanks to their keenness on photography and filming we have a lot of resources to look at from this period.
When Hitler was away, Gretl and Eva Braun lived at the Berghof but the older sister preferred to be in Munich. In 1943 Ewa returned to her old job at Hoffmann’s studio whilst Gretl attended the Bavarian State College for Photography , then called the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Lichtbildwesen. Whereas Hitler appears to have worried about her and wanted her to be at the Berghof out of the way of bombing, there was an air raid shelter in the house in Munich and she had two SS bodyguards.
At the times they were at the Berghof, Gretl enlivened the formal atmosphere with jokes, cigarette smoking and flirting with the orderlies. Hitler's secretary Traudl Junge attempted to persuade her to give up smoking but to no avail. Traudl Junge mentioned that Hitler sought to marry off his partner’s younger sister. Gretl Braun was in a relationship with Fritz Darges but Junge hints that Hitler did not approve of the match saying that ‘the relationship was too dangerous given Gretl’s closeness to him as political leader.
She had met SS-Gruppenführer Hermann Fegelein at Obersalzberg. He was the liaison officer of Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler to the Führer headquarters and noted for being a ladies man. She married him on 3 June 1944.
As far as Fegelein is concerned, this possibly was a marriage of convenience to get him into Hitler’s family circle.
Hitler left the Berghof, never to return, on 14 July 1944.
The girls had a cousin, Gertrude Weisker, who recounted after the war that Eva had found a radio in the Eagle’s Nest and out of reach of their SS bodyguards they would listen to foreign broadcasts, something which in theory could have got them a death sentence.
On 19 January 1945 Gretl and Eva Braun arrived at the Reich Chancellery in Berlin, but returned to Berchtesgaden on 9 February 1945, possibly as a result of Soviet troops now being over the Oder river and only 80km from Berlin. Eva Braun later traveled back to Berlin alone.
On 28 April 1945 Fegelein deserted the Bunker. He was arrested drunk in possession of valuables, with a woman and clearly had been out of uniform. When Hitler got news that Himmler was attempting to surrender to the western Allies, he revenged himself on Fegelein having him shot.
Hitler and Eva Braun committed suicide in the afternoon of 30 April 1945.
Retreating SS troops set fire to the Berghof on 4 May 1945, but giving the locals a couple of hours warning so that they could help themselves to anything useful in the house before it was destroyed.
On 5 May 1945, Gretl Fegelein-Braun gave birth to a daughter on Obersalzberg, whom she named in memory of her sister Eva. On the same day, Obersalzberg was liberated.
Life was probably quite tough for Gretl as a single mother in post war Germany. On 6 February 1954 she married Kurt Berlinghoff in Munich. Her father died on 22 January 1964. Her daughter Eva Barbara Fegelein committed suicide aged 25 on 8 April 1971 after her boyfriend was killed in a car accident. Her mother Fanny died aged 90 on 13 January 1976.
Gretl died on 10 October 1987 in Steingaden, Bavaria, aged 72.
