Westbury Castle, originally Talacre Hall, is a Tudor-Gothic mansion in Flintshire, Wales, built by the Mostyn family between 1825 and 1829 on the site of an earlier manor house. After the Mostyns moved out in 1920, the estate became a Benedictine convent before being split into apartments and private homes in the late 20th century. The building is a Grade I|* listed property, known for its elaborate architecture and the private chapel and bell tower it retains.

Origins and the Mostyn Family

Early Manor:

The original Manor of Westbury was part of the possessions of Odo, William the Conqueror's half-brother, in the 11th century, though it passed to the L'Estrange family by 1223.

Talacre Hall:

The Mostyn family, who had Tudor connections, acquired the property and built Talacre Hall on the site over centuries.

Tudor Gothic Mansion:

In the 1820s, the 7th Baronet Mostyn commissioned the current Tudor Gothic mansion, a project that took place between 1825 and 1829.

From Convent to Modern Living

Benedictine Convent:

The Mostyn family left Talacre Hall in 1920, and the estate was purchased by an order of Benedictine nuns.

The Convent of St. Benedict:

The nuns established a convent there, building a church and a campanile (bell tower) in the 1930s and 1950s.

Return to Private Use:

The nuns left the property at the end of the 20th century, and it was converted back to a private home, eventually being split into 11 separate residential dwellings.
