A PROMISE OF INHERITANCE
Question A. What inheritance did God promise to Abraham and his seed?
Genesis 17 verse 7 and 8;
"And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.""And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God."
1 Chronicles 16 verse 15 to 18;
"Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations;""Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac;""And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant,""Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance;"
Romans 4 verse 13.
"For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith."
“The gift to Abraham and his seed included not merely the land of Canaan, but the whole earth. . . . And the Bible plainly teaches that the promises made to Abraham are to be fulfilled through Christ.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, page. 170.
Question B. Of what was the earthly promised land of Canaan a symbol?
Hebrews 11 verse 8 to 10 and verse 13 to 16;
"By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.""By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:""For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.""These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.""For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.""And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.""But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city."
Revelation 21 verse 1 to 3.
"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.""And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.""And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God."
“The voice of God was heard, bidding [Abraham] not to expect immediate possession of the Promised Land, and pointing forward to the sufferings of his posterity before their establishment in Canaan. The plan of redemption was here opened to him, in the death of Christ, the great sacrifice, and His coming in glory. Abraham saw also the earth restored to its Eden beauty, to be given him for an everlasting possession, as the final and complete fulfillment of the promise.”—Ibid., page. 137.
