Sega Genesis Model 2 Restoration and Repair

In this video I clean and fix a Sega Genesis Model 2 (similar to the Mega Drive II). The A/V port is destroyed, and the expansion port cover is missing.

Unlike the original Genesis which uses a center-negative power plug, the Model 2 is 10v DC, center-negative. When I first plugged it in, nothing happened.

The inside of the machine was a little dirty, but not too bad for such an old console. I cleaned up the main board with isopropyl alcohol. Then I sprayed some DeoxIT into the power jack to see if I could revive it, but it didn't work. Pressing lightly on the power cord caused the power to cut in and out intermittently, so I reflowed the solder on the jack, but that was also ineffective. Finally, after removing, disassembling, and thoroughly cleaning the jack, it worked.

To remove the A/V port, I applied a bunch of Chip Quik low-temperature solder, but it didn't help much. I ended up cutting the already broken port into small pieces with flush cutters. I found a new port online for a good price.

I cleaned the console shell with soap and water and sprayed DeoxIT in the cartridge port. After reassembling the whole thing, I 3D printed a replacement expansion port cover that I found on Thingiverse.
