If you’ve ever bought a memory foam pillow or mattress, you might have noticed that chemical smell when you unbox it. That’s polyurethane off gassing—and for those of us who are chemically sensitive, it’s no joke. Burning eyes, headaches, and even breathing issues can result from exposure to these volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

So, what’s the fix? Patience and proper ventilation. After weeks of sauna sessions, steam cleaning, and using fans, my ergonomic pillow has finally off gassed. But what about mattresses? You can’t exactly toss one in a sauna.

Here’s what I recommend:
✔️ Opt for organic—but be aware that even “organic” mattresses can be treated with flame retardants.✔️ Buy off the floor—choose a showroom model that’s already aired out.✔️ Ask about manufacturing processes—some brands prioritize non-toxic materials and minimal chemical exposure.

Your sleep environment matters—especially if you’re dealing with sensitivities, inflammation, or chronic health concerns.
