When my 9-year-old daughter asked the other day "What if we're wrong and another religion is right" this is the story we turned to. In my experience, Christians tend to be way more afraid of questions than Christ was. I was DELIGHTED to share this story with her because I think it is SO important to give Christians permission to ask questions and wrestle through the answers, rather than shutting down question asking. When that happens the questions tend to start piling up like water behind a dam, and if that dam eventually fails, the results are way more likely to be catastrophic.

But I think part of the reason we are scared of questions is because we've been lazy about hunting down answers to them ourselves. We need to do a better job loving God with all our minds and engaging thoughtfully and knowledgeably with big questions. And also being comfortable holding a posture of intellectual humility and saying "I don't know, but let's go look for answers together."

This story can be found in Matthew 11 and Luke 7. Jesus is referencing Isaiah 35:4-6 and 61:1.
