Peter Schultz is the president and chief executive officer of Scripps Research. As a chemist, he has been a pioneer in the fields of chemical and synthetic biology. As a successful biotech entrepreneur, he has founded nine companies that have pioneered the development and application of molecular diversity technologies to challenges in energy, materials and human health. In 1999, he established the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation, serving as its director for more than 10 years. In 2012, he established Calibr, a nonprofit biomedical research institute designed as a new model to accelerate the discovery of medicines for unmet needs. Schultz earned his undergraduate and doctoral degrees at the California Institute of Technology. After postdoctoral studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he joined the faculty at the University of California, Berkeley. He joined Scripps Research in 1999 and was appointed chief executive officer in 2015. The following year, he was named president of the institute.

The inaugural Spectrum symposium, hosted on February 20, 2019 in La Jolla, California, convened thought leaders from across the country for discussions around accelerating delivery of novel medicines to the patients desperately in need of new therapies. Over 200 attendees-- foundation representatives, philanthropists, biopharma leaders, healthcare investors and research scientists-- listened to Scripps Research scientists share their basic and translational research efforts. The symposium inspired follow-up discussions about potential initiatives and collaborations to impact public health.
