Sam Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs is one of the most unsettling psychological
films of the early 70s, a slow, boiling descent into violence, masculinity, and the terrifying fragility of civility. Dustin Hoffman stars as David Sumner, an American mathematician who moves with his wife Amy (Susan George) to her rural English hometown to escape the chaos of U.S. life. But the town’s hostility, old tensions, and Amy’s unresolved past collide, turning the quiet countryside into a pressure cooker. When a brutal assault and escalating harassment push David to his breaking point, the film becomes a harrowing battle of survival inside the very home meant to protect them. The screenplay by David Zelag Goodman and Peckinpah (based on Gordon Williams’ novel The Siege of Trencher’s Farm) strips away heroism and morality, leaving raw instinct and desperation. John Coquillon’s cinematography traps viewers in tight interiors and fog-choked exteriors, while Jerry Fielding’s score pulses with dread. Hoffman delivers one of his most chilling performances, transforming from a meek intellectual to a man defending his home at any cost.
