Hognose snakes are an incredibly unique group of snakes that we have in the United States! Of the many species, eastern hognoses (Heterodon platirhinos), have to be one of the most variable and colorful! These spectacular snakes reach about 3 feet at adulthood (just under one meter) and feed primarily on frogs and roads their entire lives. These snakes are Opisthoglyphous meaning they possess fangs in the back of their mouths as opposed to the front. Although not typically dangerous to humans, hognose snakes can deliver a venomous bite. Their venom may not cause anything more than some swelling and pain in humans, but it definitely gets the job done while they’re hunting toads! We ended up finding two beautiful snakes on this little trip and I’m glad we could showcase just how interesting and neat these little snakes are!
