Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the Eastern Front of World War II continues with the largest invasion in history - Operation Barbarossa. In this episode of our Eastern Front Week-by-Week series, we dive into the pivotal third week of August 1941. In the third week of August 1941, the exhausted Red Army continued to strike back at the advancing Wehrmacht across the Eastern Front. Soviet counterattacks brought temporary gains but often collapsed into costly retreats. In the skies, the VVS showed signs of recovery after its June disaster, while the Luftwaffe struggled to maintain pressure on multiple fronts. Around Velikiye Luki and Lake Ilmen, intense fighting tested both sides’ endurance. In the Yelna Salient, Zhukov’s determined offensive clashed with German defensive stubbornness, while Hitler’s attention shifted south. Against the advice of his generals, he ordered Guderian to turn toward Kyiv, aiming to encircle the entire Southwestern Front. This decision would set the stage for one of the largest encirclement battles in history. From desperate air raids to armored breakthroughs and grinding attrition, this episode covers the brutal reality of mid-August 1941.
