My street photography in the North West of England during the month of January, 2026.

I always embark on a month-long photo project to beat the winter blues at the start of each year. Last time I set out to shoot a black-and-white photo every day, this time I set myself the challenge of only using a single 85mm lens (the Canon EF 85 f1.8) for street shooting for the whole month of January.

In this video I take the viewer out with me into Manchester and Stockport UK to see how I make my pictures using a POV camera (Insta360) alongside my Canon film and dSLRs. I reveal the settings I use on my camera for particular scenes, and compare film with digital photography.

I discuss the reasons why it might be a good idea to shoot with one lens consistently over a period of time, and try to dispel the myth that street photography has to be done using wide angle lenses. I show examples of the pictures I have taken during the month, and critique my own work.

I conclude the video with a personal view of how I found the project helped me grow as a photographer, and the challenges it threw up.
