Environmentally sustainable and cost-effective marine transport is essential in an economy where 90% of world trade occurs by sea. It requires balancing energy efficiency, safety, emission regulations, and dynamic demand for transported goods, under ever-changing meteorological and oceanographic conditions. As essential as the maritime industry is in providing convenience to our lives, the routes ships take are traditional but not necessarily optimal. Marine routing is inherently a spatial optimization problem, and the ArcGIS platform, arguably, has much of the necessary infrastructure to solve these problems (for example, Living Atlas data, cost and path tools, weighted overlay, EBK, scipy, and machine learning models).  We present here a prototype for an optimal marine routing solution based on Esri technology.
