One of the ancestors of the cultivated apple (of which there are more than 6,000 varieties), it can live to up to 100 years. Mature trees grow to around 10m in height. With greyish brown, flecked bark, trees can become quite gnarled and twisted, especially when exposed, and the twigs often develop spines. The flowers provide an important source of early pollen and nectar for insects, particularly bees, and the fruit is eaten by birds, including blackbirds, thrushes and crows. Í nútímanum vaxa á silkiveginum fjölmargar ólíkar eplategundir sem bera ýmisst stór epli eða pínulítil á stærð við baunir í gulum, gulgrænum, súkkulaðibrúnum og rauðbrúnum litum en þar er einnig að finna M. seiversii sem er forfaðir flestra ræktaðra epla á Vesturlöndum.
Aldei ætti samt að neyta skemmdra eða myglaðra epla en í þeim er stundum að finna eiturefnið patulin sem myglusveppurinn Penicillium expansum veldur soft rot og getur illa skemmt epli geymt mikið magn patulin mycotoxin eiturs sem veldur krabbameini í músum á tilraunastofum. Patulin sem drepur bæði Gram positive og Gram negative bakteríum til að vernda yfirráða svæði sitt. Það er ekki nóg að skera burtu mörðu partana í eplahýðinu og nota skemmd epli til matargerðar því þegar augað nemur myglubletti á hýðinu þá er allt eplið fullt af sveppaþráðum sem augað fær ekki greint.
