Santhanagopalam Kathakali, one of the most popular stories in the Kathakali repertoire, begins with Arjuna visiting Lord Krishna in Dwaraka and while exchanging pleasantries,an old brahmin rushes in with the deadbody of his ninth child.All his nine children died soon after birth and he accuses Lord Krishna of his plight.Krishna refuses to acknowledge the Brahmin and walks off without consoling him.Arjuna feels sad that neither Lord Krishna nor any of his courtiers had a word to pacify the old brahmin.In his chivalry he promises to protect the the brahmin's next child. He brags that he is the great Arjuna who has blessings of all the gods and if he is not able to save the child he will take his life by jumping into fire.The old brahmin goes back satisfied with the assurance of Arjuna. When his wife becomes pregnant and is about to deliver, he meets Arjuna and requests him to keep his word. Arjuna creates a special protective shelter with his arrows for the brahmin's wife and the midwife for the labour. The shelter is so foolproof that even sunlight cannot enter it. But, after the delivery, the midwife tells that the body of newborn is missing. Agitated the old brahmin goes wild with anger on Arjuna. Arjuna's ego takes a worst beating and he prepares to take his life by jumping into fire. At that moment, Krishna appears and stops him. Krishna informs Arjuna that there is nothing to be so worried and all the ten children are there at Vaikunta. Krishna alongwith Arjuna starts for Vaikunta. During their journey, darkness prevails and Krishna orders Sudarsana Chakra to show the path. Sudarsana shows the path and at Vaikunta they find the ten children playing happily. When Krishna requests the children to come with them, the children refuse to go saying that they will never leave their parents Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. But Lord Vishnu himself asks them to go with Arjuna and Krishna. The children obey and they are handed over to the Brahmin and his wife by Arjuna.
