This is the world premier recording 1944. The Vienna Phil horn player Gottfried von Freiberg and Karl Bohm, the Horn-conductor pair who did the world premier at the Salzburg festival the previous year. Both Freiberg and Bohm had worked with Strauss a lot, so that this can ben seen as a definitive performance (in terms of the tempo and interpretation being what Strauss wanted).
