Lucknow, 18 January 2023: #Duringcovid we all saw that #middleclass and #uppermiddleclass people were also consuming #unbalanceddiet. Private and government agencies need to work together, so that many more varieties can be brought out without reducing the productivity. In this, we also have to ensure that the health of the soil does not deteriorate in this. Dr. Devesh Chaturvedi, Additional Chief Secretary, #Agriculture, Government of Uttar Pradesh said these things. He was addressing a workshop on '#Biofortification - A Pathway to Improve #IndiaNutritionalOutcomes' organized jointly by #FICCI, #GAIN, #Syngenta Foundation India and #HarvestPlus on Thursday.

The objective of the conference is to provide a platform to all the stakeholders to outline the potential of #biofortifiedcrops in #eradicatingmalnutrition and deliberate on the actions required at policy and operational level to unleash the potential of biofortified crops in the country.

The world population is expected to reach 9.8 billion by 2050. Viewed from this perspective, #agriculturalproduction and its supply chain are very vulnerable to current global crises such as climate change and the #COVID19pandemic. The conference also deliberated upon the need for further focus through policy and financial support to accelerate the growth of the biofortified crop sector in a sustainable, responsive, inclusive and #equitablemanner.

Organized by FICCI, the conference brought together a diverse group of stakeholders including senior government officials, scientists, #farmers, #researchers and #industrialists to discuss the opportunities and challenges in eradicating #malnutrition through biofortified crops.

In his keynote address, SK Dora, Chief General Manager, #NABARD, Uttar Pradesh said, “14 per cent people in India are malnourished. A large percentage of children are #underweight, many women are #anaemic. This has brought to the fore the problem of hunger which is not usually visible. By increasing the #micronutrient content of #foodgrains, we can solve the problem of hidden hunger in a big way. The #biofortifiedcereal will meet 100% of #Vitamin A, 80% of #Iron and 70% of #Zinc requirement.

Ishank Gorla, Program Lead – CBCP, GAIN said, “Over the years, India has adopted strategies like #foodfortification and bridging the food gap through #middaymeals. Along with this, through awareness programmes, emphasis has also been laid on eating more millets for a balanced diet. Biofortification is also sustainable and complements other government policies. We need to do more to ensure that our crops are also more resilient to climate change.”

In the theme address, Ravinder Grover, Regional Coordinator – Asia, HarvestPlus, said, “70 percent of all #malnourishedchildren live in #Asia. $12 billion was spent to tackle malnutrition and #hiddenhunger. Faced with these threats to the economy, we in our country began this journey 20 years ago with a question, "What if we could do something about our plants to make them more nutritious for human health?" become?"'" And that was the idea behind biofortification. Today we have over 400 varieties of staple crops that are biofortified.”

Pankaj Shukla, Chief Operating Officer, #AgriEntrepreneur #GrowthFoundation, said, “The new challenge we are facing today is hidden hunger. It is basically the deficiency of vital nutrients in the #humanbody. Biofortification is a sustainable way to deal with these problems. Biofortification crops also have no recurring costs because once the variety is developed, no further costs are required thereafter.

The conference included keynote and panel discussions by Anil Kumar Sagar, Deputy Director Agriculture, Government of Uttar Pradesh, Rajeev Dayma, Deputy General Manager, NABARD, Mr. Abhishek Awasthi, #SPMLivelihoodFarms, UP and many more. State #RuralLivelihoodsMission, GoUP, Taruna Singh, #Nutritionist, Mid Day Meal Authority, #BasicEducation, #GoUP, Arbha Das, Director Program Excellence, Rural Foundation India, Mr. Moroop Namgail, Head - #Agritech, #IFFCO Kisan, Dr. Satyen Yadav, Founder, India Millets Initiative, President, HPMI, Prof. Vinod Kumar Mishra, Professor, Department of Genetics and #PlantBreeding, Institute of #AgriculturalSciences, #BanarasHinduUniversity, and Dr. C. Neeraja, Principal Scientist & Coordinator- #CRPiofortification, #IIRR- #ICAR, Prateek Uniyal, Program Manager, #CBCIndia, HarvestPlus-IFPRI were present on the occasion.
