---- Short History ----
Lime is a calcium-containing inorganic mineral composed primarily of oxides.
It has been used since ancient times for its adhesive properties in construction, notably concrete, cement and mortar.
Lime could also be used as a fertiliser by farmers after it was burnt by charcoal in a kiln.
It would later be burnt by coal on an industrial scale.
Flux from limestone is later combined in the Copper and Iron smelting process to purify the metal.
In the early 1700s Copper smelting in Swansea became Britain’s major industry, fuelling demand for flux.
In the late 1700s Iron smelting began in South Wales, further fuelling the demand for flux.
Life was hard at a quarry. Workers would use sledgehammers to break the limestone into smaller pieces. They would bring enough food for multiple days and cook it with the kiln charcoal or coal.
