British composer Mark Bowden (b.1979) composed his 'Parable' for solo alto saxophone in 2012 as part of a project with the London Sinfonietta. On his website, Mark Bowden has a programme note for the piece that mentions that it was inspired "from the legend of the Gordian Knot in which Alexander the Great, unable to untie the rope, slices the knot in half with his sword, ensuring his future good fortune. The piece doesn’t depict the story in a literal sense but explores a cyclical pattern of notes that is periodically ‘cut’ by interjecting material." There is also a beautiful atmosphere about this work that the programme note does not mention. Mark Bowden comes from Wales, and this piece also seems to capture something of the Welsh landscape, wind sounds, solitude, and at times also fragments and memories of dance-like folk music. This recording comes from a live performance given at the Singapore Saxophone Symposium in August 2018.
