BAUXITE DEPOSIT IS THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD - SOUND

On the east coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria in the far northern Queensland lies the town of Weipa, centre of the world's largest known deposit of bauxite, the ore from which aluminium is extracted. Apart from the plant buildings, accomodation for the four hundred and twenty odd people in the town is porvided by neatly laid out married and single quarters. Mine manager is CLEM DAVIDSON and DON MORGAN is the mechanical design engineer. From the mine-face, the ore is transported to rubber belt conveyors which in turn carry it to the processing plant. At the wet screening plant waste is removed and the ore graded. It is then placed in stock piles to await loading.
