Catherine of Aragon, famous first wife of Henry VIII, was actually married first to Henry's brother, Arthur.

When Arthur died, there was much debate as to whether she should marry the young Henry to maintain the alliance between Spain and England.

Henry VII initially arranged this, however, Catherine's father Ferdinand of Aragon had only paid half the promised dowry for her first wedding!

The resulting dispute delayed the wedding for 7 years until Henry VII died.

The new Henry VIII, young and deeply in love with Catherine, married her almost instantly.

In the short term, this worked well.

But as we know, things didn't turn out too well in the end!
