In Karnataka’s Dharwad district, a tragic case of caste violence unfolded when 20-year-old Manya Dhoddamani, six months pregnant, was allegedly murdered by her father and relatives for marrying outside her caste. Manya, a Lingayat, had married Vivekananda Dhoddamani, from a Scheduled Caste community, in May after a two-year relationship. Despite police warnings to her family, hostility persisted.

On December 8, while working on a farm in Inam Veerapur village, Manya was attacked with pipes by her father Prakashgouda Patil and relatives Veeranagouda Patil and Arunagouda Patil. Her mother-in-law and a relative were also assaulted when they tried to intervene. Manya succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

Police confirmed arrests of the accused and registered a case of murder. Vivekananda narrowly escaped another assault during the attack. The incident has reignited questions about whether India’s caste system continues to destroy love and lives.
