PBW 872 is a high-yielding, disease-resistant variety of wheat developed by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana. Released in 2025, it is suitable for cultivation in the North Western Plains Zone of India, including Punjab, and is particularly well-suited for early-sown, irrigated conditions. 

Key characteristics and benefits:

High yield: It is the highest-yielding variety under early-sown, high-input conditions in the North Western Plains Zone, outperforming older varieties like PBW 826 and DBW 222.

Disease resistance: It has moderate resistance to yellow and brown rust.

Grain quality: It has thick, shiny, and bold grains with a high 1000-grain weight, which is beneficial for marketing. It also has excellent chapati-making quality.

Nutritional content: The grain is notable for its high micronutrient levels, including iron and zinc.

Suitable for specific farming methods: Its average height is around 100 cm, which reduces the risk of lodging (the bending over of crops). It takes approximately 152 days to mature, making it a very suitable variety for the paddy-wheat crop cycle in Punjab.

Faster maturity: It matures in approximately 148 days under timely sown, irrigated conditions, which is slightly faster than many other recent varieties.
Heat tolerance: PBW 826 was developed to withstand high temperatures during the crucial grain-filling stage, which helps farmers avoid crop losses from heat waves.
Disease resistance: It offers moderate resistance to yellow and brown rust diseases.
Superior grain quality: PBW 826 produces bold, lustrous grains with a higher hectolitre weight, which is a key indicator of good grain quality.
Shorter plant height: At about 100 cm, its plant height is shorter than most recently released varieties.
