STORYLINE
The world's most valuable coin went on display in London on Friday - an American 1933 Double Eagle worth more than seven million US dollars.
It's one of the rarest coins of all time.
Almost half a million of the 20 US dollar gold pieces were minted in 1933.
But before they even left the US Mint they were melted down - sacrificed as part of a plan to free America from the Gold Standard during the Depression.
Only thirteen are known to have survived. Just one is legally in private hands.
The coin on display is owned by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.
It's being exhibited amid tight security at Goldsmiths' Hall in London - a suitably opulent setting for what's been described as perhaps the most valuable ounce of gold on the planet.
"This is the coin they tried to ban," said Peter Swanston, CEO of London Mint Office, which is hosting the exhibition. "Only a few escaped."
Karen Lee, the Smithsonian Institution coin curator, said the coin was an icon of 20th century American history.

"A couple were pulled out to be assayed to check the purity of the gold, and our 'rock star' is one of them that survived the meltdown."
This is the first time that a 1933 Double Eagle has been exhibited in Europe.
