남덕유산(1,507m)에서 무룡산(1,492m) 그리고 동업령(1,320m)으로 이어지는 남서-북동 방향의 산줄기는 덕유산의 주능선 방향이며, 백두대간의 일부 구간이기도 하다. 이 사진은 동업령 부근에서 남쪽을 바라보고 촬영한 것이다. 정면에 우뚝 솟은 봉우리가 무룡산이며, 그 오른쪽 너머 봉우리가 남덕유산이다. 한편 왼편에 멀리 구름 위로 길게 늘어선 산릉이 지리산 주능선인데, 그중 가장 높은 봉우리가 천왕봉이다. 적설기에 많은 등산객들이 남덕유산에서 북덕유산까지 종주 등반을 하는데, 보통 그 중간에 있는 삿갓재 대피소에서 하루를 묵는다.
주능선의 양쪽 사면을 따라 깊은 계곡이 발달해 있고, 계곡 곳곳에 폭포가 나타난다. 길이가 무려 30㎞에 달하는 무주구천동은 덕유산을 대표하는 계곡이며, 무주군 안성면 용추계곡에는 용추폭포와 칠연폭포가 유명하다. 덕유산은 남쪽 지방에 있으나 고도가 높아 겨울철에 눈이 많이 온다. 남쪽 지방 최대 스키장인 무주리조트가 덕유산의 최고봉인 북덕유산 향적봉(1,614m) 북쪽 사면에 자리 잡고 있는 것도 그 이유 때문이다. 향적봉은 백두대간에서 약간 벗어나 있는데, 무주리조트의 스키 곤돌라가 정상 부근까지 운행되어 쉽게 오를 수 있다. 덕분에 어린이나 노인들도 겨울 설경을 즐길 수 있다.

The southwest-northeast ridge extending from Namdeokyusan (1,507m) to Muryongsan (1,492m) and Dongeopryeong (1,320m) forms the main ridge of Deogyusan and is also part of the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range. This photo was taken from near Dongeopryeong, looking south. The towering peak directly ahead is Muryongsan, and the peak beyond it to the right is Namdeokyusan. To the left, stretching far above the clouds, is the main ridge of Jirisan, the highest peak being Cheonwangbong Peak. During the snow season, many hikers climb the entire route from Namdeokyusan to Bukdeokyusan, often staying overnight at the Satgatjae Shelter along the way.
Deep valleys develop along both sides of the main ridge, and waterfalls appear throughout the valleys. Muju Gucheondong, stretching a staggering 30km, is Deogyusan's signature valley, while Yongchu Valley in Anseong-myeon, Muju County, is famous for Yongchu Falls and Chilyeon Falls. Although Deogyusan Mountain is located in the southern region, its high altitude means it receives heavy snowfall in winter. This explains why Muju Resort, the largest ski resort in the southern region, is located on the northern slope of Hyangjeokbong Peak (1,614m), Deogyusan's highest peak. While Hyangjeokbong Peak is located slightly off the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range, Muju Resort's ski gondola operates to the summit, making it easily accessible. This allows both children and seniors to enjoy the snowy winter scenery.
