On day three of my twelve days journey to Yulara, NT and back home, I travelled from Port Augusta to Coober Pedy, SA and visited Island Lagoon Lookout, Woomera Aircraft and Missile Park and Lake Hart. On this trip, I am riding my 2019 Suzuki V-Strom 1000 XT, and the journey is a Solo Ride.
About Uluru:
Rising dramatically from the Central Australian desert, the huge red rock of Uluru is one of Australia’s most iconic attractions. Uluru is made of sandstone about half a billion years old. It stands 348 metres high and has a circumference of 9.4 km.
Roadhouse, Pimba and Glendambo SA
The only respite to the endless highways of the Outback are the roadhouses that dot the landscape every few hundred kilometres. They’re a welcome sight for weary eyes or drivers with a flashing fuel light. And they’re a reminder that there is life out there after all.
Aircraft and Missile Park, Woomera SA
Woomera is an artificial town designed by the Long Range Weapons Board of Administration to provide accommodation and facilities for scientists, technicians and ancillary staff who came to work at an isolated experimental station to test rockets, weapons and missiles. The Woomera Aircraft and Missile Park has well-preserved examples of most of the rockets which were launched at Woomera.
Lake Hart, Wirraminna SA
The importance of Lake Hart as a salt deposit first became evident in 1918 when surveyors investigated this entire area. They estimated the yield as three million tons and defined the lake’s area as 98 square kilometres. Once upon a time, it was a thriving industry, and today it is forgotten in isolation.
Underground Motels, Coober Pedy SA
It is estimated that about 50% of the population lives underground now. Most dugout homes are excavated into hillsides rather than dug from shafts. The soil in the Coober Pedy hillside is stable enough to allow huge ceiling spans in rooms, and it is not unusual for a mining family to buy an adjoining property and tunnel to link two dwellings or even three or four. Some mansion-style homes spread up to 450 square metres underground.
