Описание к видео Don't Get Tripped Up, Stay Upright: 5 Essential Safety Tips From A Clumsy Physio (Expert Insights)

Safety issues can be quite intimidating. Mistakes will happen but it's how we respond to those mistakes that matters. Take a growth mindset and utilize these moments as opportunities to learn from and improve upon. So, let's dive into five essential safety tips that can help you avoid the pitfalls I encountered in my early career.

Safety Tip 1: The Right Footwear for Physiotherapy
Your patients will wear everything from boots to flip-flops to no shoes at all. Your role is to get them back to what they need for their daily life. This may involve practicing balance exercises with the exact footwear or equipment they will be wearing in their activities. Start simple and progress with the patient. And remember, with regard to footwear in the clinic, be careful barefoot and don't ever go sock-only on slippery floors.

Safety Tip 2: The Importance of Gait Belts
A gait belt should be used to keep your patient safe during balance exercises. Carry one with you always and have extra belt in your bag.

Safety Tip 3: AFOs for Foot Drop
Foot drop is a common problem that leads to many serious falls. While the cause needs to be addressed, the use of an AFO can lower the risk of falls while you are working on the root condition of the foot drop. They're cheap, easy to use and effective.

Safety Tip 4: Progressive Balance Exercises
Balance, like strengthening, needs to be a challenge to improve. Examples include narrowing the base of support, decreasing hand support, trying eyes closed and adding unstable surfaces.

Safety Tip 5: Navigating Stairs Safely
Working with patients on stairs can be tricky. Always plan ahead and ensure the patient is ready, both up and down. Be sure you’re positioned below the patient for maximum safety. Always have a buddy present to assist if necessary. Lastly, the documentation of incidents, which includes near-misses, is just as important as the treatment itself.
