If you're getting a “The disk is write protected” error, it means your system is unable to write to the disk (USB drive, SD card, or external hard drive) because it is locked or restricted. Here's a step-by-step guide to fix it.

Step 1: Check for Physical Lock (if USB/SD card)

Some USB drives and SD cards have a physical write-protection switch.

Remove the disk from your computer.

Check for a small switch on the side.

If it’s set to Lock, move it to Unlock.

Re-insert the disk and check again.

Step 2: Use Diskpart to Remove Write Protection (Windows)

Press Windows + R, type cmd, and press Enter.

In the Command Prompt, type: diskpart

Press Enter.

Then type: list disk

This shows all disks. Identify your disk number by size.

Now type: select disk X


Replace X with the number of your disk (e.g., select disk 1).

Then type: attributes disk clear readonly


Type exit to close diskpart, then close the Command Prompt.

🔁 Try copying files again.

Step 3: Check Windows Registry (Advanced)

⚠️ Be careful when editing the registry.

Press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter.

Navigate to:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies


Look for a value called WriteProtect.

If you see it, double-click it and set the value to 0.

If you don’t see StorageDevicePolicies:

Right-click Control New Key → Name it StorageDevicePolicies.

Right-click on the right pane → New DWORD (32-bit) Value → Name it WriteProtect.

Double-click it and set its value to 0.

Close Registry Editor and restart your computer.

Step 4: Try Formatting the Disk (Warning: Data Loss)

If nothing works and you're okay with losing the data:

Open File Explorer.

Right-click the disk and select Format.

Choose file system (e.g., FAT32 or NTFS) and uncheck "Quick Format" if you want a full format.

Click Start.

If you're unable to format, try using Diskpart with:

clean
create partition primary
format fs=ntfs

Step 5: Use Third-Party Tools (Optional)

Some free tools that can remove write protection or format stubborn drives:

SD Formatter (by SD Association)

EaseUS Partition Master
