Cell phones are one of the dirtiest things we encounter daily, yet we almost always carry one with us. However, they're germ magnets and can carry viruses which can spread!

A study from the university of Arizona found that high school student phones carry 10x more bacteria than a toilet seat.

What good is washing your hands if you pick up the same dirty phone you were holding before you wash your hands? You’ll pick up all the germs you washed away all over again.

So clean your phone at least once a day, and more often if someone else handles your phone (like your kids!).

So how do you properly clean and sanitize your phone?  
Obviously you can’t just run it in the dishwasher or throw it in some bleach. The first step to keeping your phone clean is to avoid getting it dirty. Read our tips below.

4 Ways to Keep your Phone Cleaner    
1. Wash your hands often and use hand sanitizer. The less germs on your hands, the less you will get on your phone.

2.  Avoid taking your phone into the bathroom with you (up to 75 % of Americans use their phone while on the toilet). 

3.  Avoid sharing your phone with other people.  

4.  Use ear buds or a head set. 

Despite these precautions, there is no doubt you will still have bacteria and viruses on your phone.

Manufacturer's Warnings
For both Samsung and iPhone, using cleaning agents go against their recommendations and may cause damage. Your iPhone has an anti-fingerprint, oil repelling coating on it, and using household cleaners can diminish this coating and might even scratch your iPhone. During this time, Apple said it's ok.

Be sure to check out your own phone manufactures recommendations before putting any cleaners on them.

Use a Microfiber Cloth

Avoid getting moisture an any openings, so be careful around the speaker, USB and port and other openings.  

You are wiping off some viruses and bacteria, but not all and you aren’t killing any germs. But your phone will look clean and shiny.

Use Isopropyl Alcohol or Alcohol Wipes

To kill the germs, you need to keep the alcohol on your phone for the proper amount of time. You need to let it sit for 30 seconds.

Then you can use a dry corner to wipe it off. Apple has said you can use a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes (if there are any in stock, look here: https://amzn.to/3xlzPuh).

Don't use bleach. Avoid getting moisture in any openings, and don't submerge your iPhone in any cleaning agents.

Also, remember to clean the phone case, AND your earbuds, cords and charger.  

UV Light Disinfectant

If you don’t want to take the risk of damaging the phone or coating, but still want it really disinfected, you have another option: UV lights. Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) is a disinfection method that uses short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV-C) light to kill or inactivate microorganisms.
