FAQ: How to explain to other professionals the issues regarding episodic memory and why we need to be very cautious asking about events?

Think about how our memories register - the sensory experience is an important part of memory creation and also the affect / emotions connected to the experience. Where the person has selective sensory channels this will also impact on how the memory is created.

So all the different components have to assemble in the hippocampus and then there needs to be language to be able to explain the memory .

Example - a person needed help in the rest room and while there experienced some unconnected pain - this may be expressed as ‘I felt pain in the rest room with Joan helping me’ - and could be misinterpreted! This type of thing could easily put people off wanting to work with our children.

The best thing is to protect everyone by video taping as much as possible .

If you want to work on improving episodic memory skills writing journals is a good way - it is very interesting then to see how the students memory may be different because of the selective sensory channels eg . Soma’s journal - ‘ I saw x, y, z’ whereas Tito’s- ‘ the room felt like the taste of .. !
