What is Medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury?

A strain, partial tear, or entire tear of the ligament located on the inside of the knee is considered as an MCL injury. The one of the most prevalent knee injuries consists of this. Medial collateral ligament is an important ligament to provide stability to knee.
Causes of Medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury?
• Sudden twisting movement
• During sports
• Accidents
• Fall from height
• Running
• Jogging


Symptoms?


• Knee discomfort on the inside
• The kneecap feels slack
• Stiffness

Diagnosis?

• Classification can be done by Valgus Stress Test to check the stability
• Radiological investigation such as X-Ray, MRI
Treatment?
Treatment is determined by grading of the injury.
• Type 1- Partial tear
This can be treated conservatively and operation is not needed. Rest, Extensive rehab for few weeks followed by exercise and some anti-inflammatory medications.
• Type 2- Complete tear
In this case surgery is required to repair or reconstruct the damaged ligament. Hamstring tendon can be used to reconstruct the ligament.
