📐 What is Keyline Design?
Planting trees and structures along the natural contour lines of the landscape – helping rainwater spread more evenly and soak into the soil.
📊 Facts about this system:
• Total area: 2.7 hectares
• First planting: December 2021
• 30 tree rows, over 2.600 m in total
• Spacing: 6.5 m between rows, 1 m within rows
• Orientation based on Keyline Design for effective water use
🌱 What was planted here:
Fruit trees:
Sea buckthorn, peach, apple, pear, sweet chestnut, plum
Berries:
Gooseberry, mahonia, cornelian cherry, mulberry, oleaster, honeyberry, serviceberry, buffaloberry, redcurrant, jostaberry
Pioneer and nurse trees:
Silver birch, alder, aspen, small-leaved birch, white poplar, hybrid poplar, kiri tree, willow tree
Fodder plants (for animals):
Goat willow, pea shrub, honeysuckle, butterfly bush, whitebeam
🎯 Long-term goals of the system:
• Produce berries and fruits
• Improve soil water storage using topography
• Create an ideal habitat for animals (like chickens) in the system
🌳 This is one of nine agroforestry systems being scientifically observated by the Finck Foundation – all systems are part of the Finck Foundations 3.000 ha living lab for regenerative and ecological land use - just an hour from Berlin. Each system has its own design, planting scheme, and purpose, but they all share one vision: reconnecting forestry, farming, and animals to create thriving, resilient ecosystems.
