September to June gardening in Zone 3.

This year we had 3 Colorado lows, two in April (blizzard, torrential rain) and then another in late May. It has been a challenging planting season, with lots of rain and flooding happening, a stark contrast to the drought we had last year.

In zone 3 plants must be started indoors to get a full harvest as we have such a short growing season, and we often have frosts in June and late September.

My soil is heavily clay based and used to have a lawn overtop which I composted last year. Because of this clay based soil, it is either heavily saturated with water and kills small seedlings, or is dry and cracked. I'm using mounds of garden soil to give a less extreme medium for the plants while small, and the roots will grow towards the wetter clay based soil underneath (ideally)! The mulch should break down over time giving more organic material to rehabilitate the soil. This year, there are hundreds and hundreds of worms.

This is the "work" part of the garden, and now I get to water plants and watch the bounty grow!
