750km, 17000m, 5 islands, 4 ferries and 4 days, those are the headline stats from the GranGuanche Road Audax, an ultra event traversing the Canary islands.

HUNT Beyond rider Manu Catrysse was on the start line to take on the challenge of the ferry games. The unique feature of the GranGunache is the race against the ferry timetable… some island connections run a regular service, whilst others only a couple of ferries per day. Planning and pacing is key, some islands can be ridden at a more leisurely pace, whilst others require the hammer to be dropped to avoid a long wait for the next boat.

As well as pacing bike and equipment selection plays a big role. It’s a fine balance between making sure the bike is light enough to tackle the huge elevation gain, Gran Canaria was a mammoth 240km effort with 6000m elevation, verses carrying enough gear to cover a range of conditions from 30 degees on Fuerte Ventura to a little above freezing on Mount Tiede, Tenerife.
