"The reality is that in this area migrants are crossing through places far away from the border checkpoint. It means, 15 to 20 kilometers away from Colchane. Also, the establishment of this border control does affect the brotherly relations that the people from Colchane have with the people from Pisiga Bolivar (Bolivia)."

STORYLINE:
Chilean military personnel guarded a border area with Bolivia on Wednesday as part of recently beefed up patrols to curb illegal migration.

They were seen detaining some migrants and turning others back during the patrols in Colchane.

Second Lieutenant Claudio Guzman, a Patrol Commander, said the soldiers were deployed to work alongside police and provide "transportation to control illegal migration and drug trafficking."

The beefed up patrols began after President Gabriel Boric issued a decree in a bid to control illegal migration from Venezuela and other countries.

The order, which came into effect on Monday, would remain in place for 90 days.
