The shutdown point is the level of output or price at which a firm covers only its variable costs, but not its fixed costs. It occurs when the market price falls below the minimum of the average variable cost (AVC) curve. At this point, the firm minimizes its losses by temporarily halting production, as continuing to operate would lead to greater losses than shutting down. The shutdown point is crucial in short-run decision-making. If price rises above the AVC, the firm may resume production; otherwise, it remains closed to avoid incurring further variable costs it cannot cover.
