How to install tiles the right way?

In this video, you will learn the NTCA-approved troweling techniques to apply tile adhesive and set tiles. This technique creates a stronger bond between the tile and the substrate. Prevent crack transmission, lippage, tile breakage, bulging or tenting, and other costly tile installation repairs.

Tiles are very durable materials that can last a lifetime – when the right tile adhesive and methodology was used. When tiles break, it is usually due to low-quality tile adhesive and faulty installation method.

The way you trowel mortar for setting tile makes a big difference. Tiles can withstand extra heavy service conditions. It takes a lot of impact or load to cause bond loss when installed correctly over a sound substrate.

On the other hand, unsupported spaces under the tiles create weak spots. Tiles with voids or air pockets underneath are easily damaged by heavy impacts, heavy loads, and other causes.

Spot bonding with mortar is also not recommended. It may be easier to set tiles this way, but it’s only a matter of time before the slightest force causes failure.

Today, many people are still using the wrong method in tile adhesive application and setting of tiles. They may get the job done more quickly, but they can’t get the proper mortar coverage and air gets trapped underneath the tiles, which ultimately leads to tile debonding.

Swirling the mortar causes voids where the tile is not bonded to the substrate. These voids can result in cracked tile and bond failure under normal use but especially under point load or impact.

Aside from impact and heavy loads, tiles with voids and poor mortar coverage are more likely to debond over a short period of time. According to the American National Standards Institute and the TCNA Handbook, a minimum of 80% mortar coverage is required for interior applications, and 95% for exteriors and wet environments.

The straight troweling method is the ANSI recommended technique in applying tile adhesive. In the latest episode of Magtanong Para Sigurado vlog, you will learn why it's the right way of applying tile adhesive.
