Taking the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid as its base, the TX Hybrid adds a thick layer of Lexus luxury but retains the family-friendly three-row layout. The result is the roomiest mid-size crossover in the Lexus showroom and a notably upscale one at that. A 366-hp hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive is standard, but a plug-in hybrid model—called TX550h+—is available and offers 404 horsepower and over 30 miles of electric-only driving range. There’s seating for two in each of the TX Hybrid’s three rows, but the rearmost row is best suited for children with short legs as the seat bottoms are placed quite low on the floor. Otherwise, the TX’s cabin is posh and nicely equipped with convenience and tech features, including a large 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, a digital gauge display, second-row captain’s chairs, heated and ventilated front seats, and a wireless smartphone charging pad. Its road manners are agreeable—although we have found the ride to be on the stiff side—and the TX doesn’t feature the same off-roading equipment as its GX and LX siblings. Instead, the TX is a rival to other pavement-focused luxo wagons, such as the Acura MDX, the Audi Q7, and the Volvo XC90.
