Among the first to compose new music for gamelan in New Zealand, David Farquhar produced two gamelan works, 1975’s Ostinato (which has seen various performances and an LP release), and the more elusive Palindrome of 1979 (not to be confused with his 1994 work of the same title for flute and tape!). This work’s score incorporates various aleatoric features necessitating a high degree of creative interpretation. Tonight’s performance is directed by and based on a reading of the score provided by Lilburn Research Fellow Anton Killin.

David Farquhar (1928-2007) was a prominent New Zealand composer. He was a Professor of Music until his retirement from Victoria University of Wellington in 1993. He wrote numerous orchestral, choral, stage and instrumental works, as well as songs and music for children, and in 2004 he was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to music.

Dr Anton Killin is the Lilburn Research Fellow 2021. Dr Killin’s research project investigates gamelan in New Zealand composition—its role and influence—as well as analyses the works produced. Dr Killin is a philosopher of music as well as an accomplished composer of gamelan music, having had gamelan works performed in New Zealand and Indonesia and released on CD (most recently on Naga published by Rattle Records).
