Fanning behavior in bees is when worker bees stand at the entrance of the hive (or inside) and rapidly fan their wings. This action creates airflow and plays several critical roles in the life and health of the colony.

Purpose of Fanning Behavior

Thermoregulation (Cooling the Hive): Bees maintain the internal temperature of the hive, especially during hot weather, to keep the brood (developing larvae and pupae) at an optimal temperature of ~35°C (95°F). Fanning helps evaporate water to cool the hive, much like an evaporative cooler.

Ventilation (Airflow and Humidity Control): Proper airflow helps remove excess carbon dioxide, moisture, and heat. Bees fan at the hive entrance and within the hive to circulate air and control humidity levels, crucial for nectar dehydration during honey production.

Nasonov Pheromone Dispersion (Orientation & Homing): Some bees fan their wings while raising their abdomens and exposing the Nasonov gland to release pheromones. This helps guide stray or foraging bees back to the hive or signals others to gather at a new location (e.g., during swarming or relocating).

How to Recognize Fanning Behavior?
Bees standstationary, facing the hive entrance or in rows.
Wings are vibrating rapidly but bees aren’t flying.
Abdomen may be raised if pheromones are being released.

When You Might Observe it:

Hot summer days (temperature regulation)
During or after rain (moisture and ventilation).
Swarming or relocating (pheromone signaling).
Heavy nectar flows (to dehydrate nectar into honey).

Fanning bees often take turns and work collectively — if the hive gets too hot or moist, more bees join in; once balance is restored, they stop. It’s a great example of hive-level intelligence and coordinated labor.
