Скачать или смотреть Seminar 1 (2nd seminar series): Explorations of Hope amidst the Emergence of the "-cenes"

This is the first session of our second series of doctoral talks called “ Advancing Research on Hope: Interdisciplinary Frameworks and Critical Dialogues ”.

This seminar, entitled “Explorations of Hope amidst the emergence of -cenes”, is jointly led by Prof. Dr. Cristina M. Gámez Fernández (University of Córdoba) and Prof. Dr. Leonor María Martínez Serrano (University of Córdoba). In the first half of the session, Cristina M. Gámez Fernández briefly introduces American scholar Jason W. Moore, focusing on his academic profile, research interests and main publications. This session critically engages with the introduction to Moore’s Capitalism in the Web of Life . As Cristina argues, Moore contests Cartesian binaries that have conceived nature and society as ontologically discrete entities. In turn, he offers an alternative metaphysical paradigm to approach the fundamental interrelation ( oikeios ) between human and extra-human entities, all of which are imbricated within the web of life. In this regard, capitalism is understood as a way of organizing nature. The intervention concludes with some questions to explore how this approach to capitalism as a world-ecology aligns with theories of hope and other interdisciplinary theories. In the second half of the session, Leonor María Martínez Serrano introduces American eco-thinker Donna Haraway. After a brief biographic and academic note, Leonor clarifies key concepts, such as the Anthropocene, the Capitalocene and the Plantationcene. She then focuses on the Chthulucene, a critical concept developed by Haraway. The Chthulucene describes a current era focused on eco-social connection. It helps us to better understand current environmental crises, but also to envision a more inclusive future. Haraway thus advocates for building non-biological, queer, and interspecies webs of care and responsibility to support a sustainable, livable future. The presentation concludes with an insightful discussion regarding the potential of the Chthulucene within hope and literary studies.
