The city of Tafresh in Iran's Markazi Province is home to a monumental, ancient wonder: a vast, hand-carved underground city (or Dastkand in Persian). Archaeologists estimate that this subterranean complex, located in the Tarkhoran area, is over 1,000 years old, possibly dating back to the Seljuk period or earlier.
This man-made marvel is believed to be one of the largest underground sites not just in Iran, but possibly in the entire Middle East, covering an estimated area of up to 150 hectares. Excavations, which began in 1998, have only uncovered a small fraction of the total area, suggesting that full exploration may take generations.
The Tafresh underground city is characterized by multiple potential inhabited levels (possibly three stories), featuring a complex network of dark, winding corridors and various functional spaces. The construction is notable for using no artificial materials—it was carved entirely out of the earth and rock using simple hand tools. Its sturdy, conglomerate architecture, with dome-shaped ceilings, has kept the structure strong and stable for centuries.
While its exact original purpose remains a subject of debate, it is widely believed to have served as an ancient civil defense strategy—a secure refuge or shelter for the inhabitants of the surface city, particularly during times of invasion, such as the Mongol attacks. Some theories also suggest it may have been used as a hiding place or place of worship for the Isma'ili sect.
Today, the Tafresh Underground City is a significant national heritage site in Iran, drawing tourists keen to explore a deep, tangible link to the country's ancient and resilient past.
