China is constructing dozens of data centers in Xinjiang's Gobi desert with plans to install over 115,000 advanced Nvidia AI chips that are banned from export to China, according to a Bloomberg investigation.

The US government restricted sales of H100 and H200 processors in 2022 over national security concerns, yet Chinese companies have received government approval for projects requiring these specific chips.

Officials estimate only 25,000 banned chips currently exist in China, creating a massive supply gap.

The desert locations offer cheap renewable energy and cooling advantages for AI computing. Companies have provided no explanation for how they plan to acquire the restricted hardware, yet construction continues across the remote region.
