Social media in recruitment
Welcome to Recruiter TV, brought to you by The Technology In Recruitment Alliance and sponsored by Smart Recruit Online, The UK's first fully automated Online recruitment toolkit for Recruiters and HR professionals.
Our first bulletin this month looks at Social media in recruitment
The airwaves are overloaded with talk and debate on subjects relating to social media in recruitment. In fact, you it would have been difficult to visit a blog or an online publication without being bombarded with Social Media messages in 2012, so how will 2013 cope with this much aligned area or marketing and engagement?
It is widely accepted that currently Social networks are failing to meet recruitment expectations. According to A survey of end clients and recruitment organisations, conducted by ERE, it has been found that 71% of respondents have hired NO ONE from twitter and 64% hired NO new staff from face book. Yet LinkedIn has seen success, with 82% of respondents reporting so. However, as linkedin has become such a well utilised reference tool, there is a wide belief that many hires are wrongly accredited to this social channel.
Face book is to introduce a new social search tool in 2013 called 'graph search' and is being trialled in the US as we speak. This will allow users to search content shared by their friends on Face book with the integrated Microsoft Bing. It will allow users to search photos, status updates, location data and likes. It has been predicted that a graph will help to drive connections between individuals and companies. It may later be adapted for recruitment to find individuals that fit certain job criteria similar to LinkedIn. So watch this space.
2013 saw the rapid growth of 'Crowd labour' within the recruitment space; a blend of contingent and flexible virtual out-sourced labour. Crowd labour is effectively Businesses using digital channels to engage with large groups of individuals for a specific task. Research house 'Massolution' says that using the crowd for 'distributed knowledge', 'innovations', 'crowd creativity' or for 'group labour' is a growing phenomena and the number of crowd workers is growing in excess of 100% a year. There are many examples of this micro working strategy starting to take hold, with companies such as Amazon getting in on the action. CEO of Odesk, Gary Swart, was quoted in a recent report by the REC as saying that he thought 'crowd labour and micro working has the potential to lift the jobs economy'.
Staying with social media in recruitment, a recent report commissioned by the REC deals with the future of social media for recruiters and suggests that 'social connectivity' might be the next phase for recruiters to grasp, as technology and data add some science to the art of recruiting.
Tomas Premuzic, professor of Business psychology at UCC says data aggregation algorithms are growing exponentially and tools, such as Klout, will provide an element or measure of 'social influence' to an individual's digital foot print.
TIRA doesn't believe that this will change the fundamentals of recruitment, but it will add to the strategic process around the assessment of skills and personality.
I'm Rachel Downie and this was a news bulletin on Social Media in recruitment, for The Recruitment In Technology Alliance and sponsored by Smart Recruit Online, The UK's very first fully automated Online recruitment solution for recruiters and HR professionals.
