The Menendez brothers’ uncle Peter Cano, who was married to Jose’s sister, testified that when Lyle was five years old, he saw Jose take a full punch at Lyle, hitting him in the chest; when Mr. Cano gave Jose a “piece of his mind,” Jose told him he would raise his sons as he saw fit and Mr. Cano could leave. Mr. Cano did leave, and never again returned to the Menendez home.

At the second trial, the court excluded substantial amounts of defense evidence, including Peter Cano’s testimony.
